Marco Schneider at the Nobel Prize Summit 2023
ICIE President Marco Schneider participated in one of the Solution Sessions at the Nobel Prize Summit 2023 in May. The event brought together laureates, experts and the public in a conversation about how it is possible to combat misinformation, restore trust in science and create a future promising.
The event, which is in its second edition, aims to connect Nobel Prize winners and other renowned researchers with policymakers, business leaders, civil society groups and youth leaders to share ideas, raise solutions and inspire action. The first edition took place in 2021, in a virtual format, bringing together more than 25,000 people from 200 countries to explore paths to planetary sustainability.
The 2023 edition, organized by the Nobel Foundation in partnership with the US National Academy of Sciences, took place in a hybrid format and was motivated by the credibility crisis of scientific institutions, governments and democracy itself. According to the organizers, “we live in a world of interconnected crises: emerging pandemics and health emergencies, post-pandemic disruptions, inflationary and monetary pressures, wars, climate change, and increased stress on society and the environment. But the volume, speed and reach of disinformation around the world is weakening the public sphere and eroding trust in science, making it one of the greatest threats to society today”.
On the panel, Schneider shared the table with writer and scientific communicator Natália Pasternak, debating the topic “Disinformation in Latin America: the public, the media, science”. The moderator was Jerónimo Giorgi, director of Latino-américa 21. The session highlighted institutional efforts that challenge disinformation, such as the “Questão de Ciência” institute. It also pointed out the particularities of anti-scientific information in several countries.
According to the Organizing Committee, “Unintentionally or intentionally, misinformation about scientific facts is widely spread around the world, on social media, in mainstream media and in everyday life. In Latin America, there is little research on the subject and there are limited public and private resources aimed at promoting understanding regarding disinformation mechanisms, neutralizing fake news and misleading information, and providing related guidelines or guidelines for action”.
