Marco Schneider and Arthur Bezerra assume the global presidency of ICIE
During the 3rd Latin America and Caribbean Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE), which took place in October 2022, researchers Marco Schneider and Arthur Bezerra assumed, respectively, the global presidency and vice-presidency of the Center.
The professors have been in charge of the Latin America and Caribbean chapter since its creation in 2017, and will preside, for four years, the institution founded in 1999, in Germany, by the Uruguayan philosopher Rafael Capurro. Plans for the four-year period involve a greater integration of researchers in information ethics, the redesign of the institution’s website and the promotion of actions to combat disinformative and unethical practices in the areas of Information and Communication.
ICIE is an academic community dedicated to advancing the field of information ethics. It provides a platform for the intercultural exchange of ideas about the field and information about teaching and research around the world. Since 2001, the Center has organized symposiums and meetings – such as the one that took place in October, in Rio de Janeiro – to share experiences between researchers and professors in the field. There are already plans for the next event to take place in Mondevideo and bring together the 4th ICIE Meeting Latin America and the Caribbean and the 1st Uruguayan Symposium on Information and Communication Ethics.
The Center also publishes books and, since 2004, has published the journal International Review of Information Ethics (IRIE), a general forum for ethical studies in the area. The publication brings an international and intercultural dialogue about the ethical impacts of information technology on human practices and thoughts, social interaction, science, research and society.
In 2018, ICIE created a community forum on its website, with the proposal to redefine the Center’s objectives and mission for a new generation, reestablishing the definitions and parameters of the field of Information Ethics.
Participation and membership in the community is free. The success of the ICIE community depends on the efforts and participation of those involved in its formation and continued growth. It is through the sharing of interests and knowledge that ICIE thrives.
