4th ICIE Latin America and Caribbean Meeting takes place in Uruguay
On October 9, 10 and 11, 2023, the 4th Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) Latin America and the Caribbean will take place with the theme “Strategies to combat disinformation: the role of information and communication ethics”. The event is organized by the Faculty of Information and Communication (FIC) of the University of the Republic, the Information and Communication Ethics Group (GETINCO) and ICIE. The 1st Uruguayan Symposium on Information and Communication Ethics will also be held during the Meeting.
The main objective of the meeting is to exchange experiences and reflections on strategies to combat disinformation and the role of information and communication ethics. The event will feature the participation of experts from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, who will contribute to conferences, debate tables and workshops open to the public.
According to Marco Schneider and Arthur Bezerra, researchers at Ibict and currently president and vice-president of ICIE, respectively, expectations regarding the meeting are high, as it represents the consolidation of efforts that have been made for some years to structure a Latin-American network. American research and teaching organization in information ethics. This network, in turn, has given new impetus to the International Center for Information Ethics, created in 1999 by professor Rafael Capurro, a Uruguayan philosopher and documentalist based in Germany. The center began in Germany and established ties in various parts of the world, constituting an international network, later coordinated by colleagues from Canada and South Africa, and which now has its presidency in Brazil and coordination in Uruguay, Argentina and Mexico.
The doctors add that the contributions will be multiple and quite rich. In addition to the illustrious presence of Capurro himself, professor Ana Regina Rego from the Federal University of Piauí will participate in the meeting, who will speak on the issue of regulating digital platforms. Ana Regina is the creator of the National Network to Combat Disinformation, in Brazil, which recently received the Luiz Beltrão Award for innovative groups, granted by the Brazilian Society for Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Intercom), the largest communication research association in the country.
Still from Brazil, there will be the remote participation of professor Carlos Alberto Ávila Araújo, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, a student of the epistemology of Information Science who has dedicated himself in recent years to the study of post-truth and disinformation, just like them. Closing the Brazilian contribution with a flourish, professor Luciane Beckman, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, will talk about information ethics in postgraduate studies in Brazil and will present her study on information mediation and feminism in Information Science.
Dr. Ariel Morán Reyes, from the Autonomous University of Mexico, will make ethical considerations on the reconfiguration of digital citizenship in Mexico. From neighboring Argentina, Dr. Esteban Zunino, from the National University of Quilmes, will address issues related to informative quality, diversity and pluralism in the mediatization of electoral processes, with emphasis on the 2023 Argentine elections.
