2nd Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics – ICIE

2nd Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) – Latin America and Caribbean Chapter debates the topic “Diagnoses and Actions to Combat Disinformation”

Faced with the challenges of the infodemic generated by the avalanche of information in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is urgent to discuss how to identify, deal with and combat misinformation, often a life or death situation. This was the conviction that guided the 2nd Meeting of the International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) – Latin America & Caribbean chapter, which took place on November 17th and 18th, 2021, with live broadcast on YouTube.

The meeting sought to bring together students, researchers and professionals around the theme “Diagnoses and Actions to Combat Disinformation”. The event was organized by the research group Perfil-i (Philosophical Perspectives on Information) of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict), coordinated by Marco Schneider and supported by CNPq, CAPES, FAPERJ and UFRJ.

“In the second edition, we decided to focus the debate around a most serious social problem, which at the same time is a topic that needs to be faced, in theory and in practice, by studies on ethics and information: the problem of disinformation”, explains Marco Schneider, coordinator of the Latin America and Caribbean chapter and researcher at Ibict’s Teaching and Research Coordination.

The first day of the event featured the diagnostics table, where current and former students, masters, masters, doctoral students and doctors, presented a summary of their research on the topic. The second day brought presentations from important Brazilian and foreign intellectuals who have consolidated production of studies and actions to combat disinformation.

The International Center for Information Ethics (ICIE) was founded by the Uruguayan philosopher Rafael Capurro, in 1999. The Latin America and Caribbean chapter, based in Rio de Janeiro, was founded through a partnership between ICIE and the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict). The partnership generated important contributions to research in information ethics in Latin America, such as scientific publications, academic meetings and the translation of texts and documents into Portuguese and Spanish.
